What Lou is up to
(15 September 2012)
Wow, what a month it's been so far! I competed in the OCB Florida State Classic on 1 Sep and won the Masters Overall in Bodybuilding and I am now officially an IFPA Pro!! I have to admit, although I didn't really talk about it beforehand, that was my goal going into the contest and I was ecstatic when I won and achieved my goal. All the hard work over the years has definitely paid off. The next day our group went on a 7-day Caribbean cruise for Edgar and Amaris' wedding and we all had an awesome time. It was a fun break that we all badly needed. Now it's back to the grind and back on the diet. I may do one more amateur level show in another organization this year so we'll see how things go...
(4 October 2012)
So I've decided to do the Drug Free Athlete's Coalition (DFAC) Florida State Natural in Ormond Beach and it's two days out! I busted my butt the last few weeks after taking a week off the diet on the cruise and it hasn't been easy getting back to where I needed to be. This show will likely be my last for this season and next I will concentrate on gaining some weight back and putting on some additional muscle. I hope to do a Pro level IFPA contest in 2013 but I have no definitive plans on which one yet...
(6 November 2012)
Well I placed 1st in the Masters Over 50 class at the DFAC Florida State Natural on 6 Oct and it was a blast. This was a smaller show but the level of competitors were top-notch. The Over 40 and Over 50 class had some really top athletes and I was honored to compete with them. Bill Mora did an awesome job in putting on this show. I've had a great year and I couldn't have done it all without the love and support of my family and all my friends. I am planning to put some weight back on and prepare for the 2013 contest season. As always, lifting will be hard and heavy and I will make some adjustments to my routine to focus on compound movements for size and strength...
(18 January 2013)
The new year is off to a good start. I've been in the "off-season" since November and have put on close to 15 pounds. My off-season is not about eating anything and everything in site either. While an occasional cheat meal is fine, I focus on adding in calories slowly and also reducing cardio from when I was prepping for competition. My strength is increasing and I'm hitting squats and dead lifts pretty hard and regularly. I hope to make my decision by the end of this month on what contests I'll be doing this year. I have a couple in mind, I just need to make sure I can work it all out...
(21 March 2013)
Ok, so I started my official prep season a few weeks ago, weighing in at close to 180 lbs which translates into just under 20 lbs gained in the "off-season". This is almost 10 lbs lighter than the start of my prep in 2012. My reasoning here was to try to limit the amount of fat I put on so I would have less to take off. We'll see how all that works out in the next few months. My target right now in mid June...
(30 April 2013)
Well it's been about 8 weeks since I started prep and I've got less than 8 weeks to go until the IFPA Pro Masters World Challenge in Amherst, MA. So far, prep is going well. I've trimmed down and I still feel strong. I'm doing cardio about 4 times per week and pretty much sticking with HIIT for 20-25 minutes per session. I'll see how I do over the next week or so to see if I need to make any adjustments there. I'm slowly cleaning up my diet and reducing carbs when I need to in order to keep dropping fat. I have my music picked out (a killer remix track by Trax Cordero) and I'm starting to put my routine together. The next 7 weeks are going to be really busy...
(7 June 2013)
So it is now 2 weeks until my first show of the year and this will definitely be the toughest competition of my bodybuilding career. The IFPA Pro Masters World Challenge in Amherst, MA will have the best Pro Masters Natural bodybuilders in the country and I will be competing against them. It's overwhelming to say the least. It's been a tough prep season as I've tried some new techniques. Some things seemed to work well, and others not so well but I'm almost where I need to be. I've got 9 more days until peak weak and I will need each one to fine tune myself to get ready for this contest...
(20 July 2013)
Well its been 4 weeks since the IFPA Pro Masters in Amherst, MA. For those of you who don't know, I placed 8th in that contest. Although I was hoping to do better, these guys were all the top IFPA Masters athletes from across the US and they all looked fantastic. Marshall Johnson and Kent Bierly are top notch bodybuilders and I was honored to share the Pro stage with them and the rest of the Pro competitors. It was a great experience and we had an awesome time. So since then I have been back at it, training hard as always. Oddly, I have not gained any weight in the last few weeks even though I have upped my calories to 3400/day including 350g of carbs! I am planning another contest in September in about 9 weeks...
(8 October 2013)
Well a lot has happened in the last couple of months. I entered the NGA Champions and Challengers Pro-Am in Tampa and placed 2nd in the Masters Over 50 class with big Marichal Seymore taking the top spot. Two weeks later, I entered the DFAC Florida State Natural and took the top spot in the Over 50 class and went on to win the Masters Overall for my DFAC Pro card! I did this same show last year taking 1st place in the Over 50 class but losing the Masters Overall to my friend Ricky Howell. Now there are decisions to make. This has been a long, drawn-out contest season for me where many sacrifices were made by me and my family for what has been mostly "all about me". I would love to go to the DFAC World Finals in Miami in November, however it may be time to call it a year and focus on some other important aspects of my life. Then maybe I can start making plans for 2014. To be continued...
(28 February 2014)
Well this is the first update in quite a while. I've been training hard as always and managed to put on about 15 lbs which is just what I planned to do. I think I did a better job of staying lean this time around so we will see once I start leaning out. I plan to do something in the June-Aug timeframe so check back and I'll be posting another update before too long...
